4.30 Rondout Reservoir in Blue and Gold

We cannot avoid intimating our individual responses in creative works…
The air was cool but the sun was bright this morning as I walked my regular route along the Rondout Reservoir. This image was captured with my iPhone 4 using the Hipstamtic app. Some additional adjustments were made in Photoshop.

…keep the process moving…experienced creators need to gain this same fundamental understanding that is somehow lost and obscured through practice.
- Shawn McNiff, Trust the Process

We hiked along the Rondout Creek this morning, starting in the Middle Field of the Sundown Wild Forest. After making our way along the narrow bank and stopping to take pictures of scenic water falls and rock formations we climbed up to the road for an easy stroll back to the car. Of course it was near the end of our walk that this stand of gray birch offered the shot of the day. This image was captured with my iPhone 4 using the Hipstamatic app. Some additional adjustments were made in Photoshop.

4.28 - Hawthorn Blossoms

The hardest part of artmaking is living your life in such a way that your work gets done, over and over… A piece of art is the surface expression of a live lived within productive patterns.
I had a lazy Saturday morning and did not get out for a walk. So this afternoon I attached a fish eye lens to my iPhone and perused our yard for inspiration. We planted this Washington Hawthorn tree several years ago. It was a free gift when we joined the National Arbor Day Foundation. I recall thinking my husband was being a bit optimistic when he planted what I equated to a “dead stick” that had arrived via the US postal service. Now we have a beautiful, tall flowering tree gracing our lawn. I never would have believed it…

…the past as something that is not really over but is an exciting feature of the present.
Another blustery morning - leaving my fingers cold and stiff as I shot this image with my iPhone 4 using the Hipstamatic app. Some additional adjustments were made in Photoshop.

…the fundamental human desire for giving shape to experience, for expressiveness, for creating form  and structure out of the confusion that constitutes both our inner and outer worlds.
While the temp is still on the chilly side, it was good to see the sun. This image was captured with my iPhone 4 using the Hipstamatic app. The Jimmy lens provides a yellow tone that enhances the early light on this cool spring morning.

4.25 - Rondout Reservoir

The basic principle that links our places and states is simple: a good or bad environment promotes good or bad memories, which inspire a good or bad mood, which inclines us toward good or bad behavior…  On some level, states and places are internal and external versions of each other.
This was a cold, cold morning walk with an incessant pattering of rain. Came home to a warm shower and a hot cup of tea... This image was captured with my iPhone 4 using the Hipstamatic app. Some additional adjustments were made in Photoshop CS6 - I love the new Blur Gallery!

4.24 - Big Hollow Barn

Family connections and memory draw us into the photographed spaces rather than leaving us gawking at the window. We “read into” those spaces with vocabularies based in our own lives.
An overcast lumbering sky accompanied me on my walk this morning - frequently showering me with ice/snow pellets... This image was captured with my iPhone 4 with the Hipstamatic app with some additional adjustments made in Photoshop.

4.23 - Old Apple Tree

In short, the places where we spend our time affect the people we are and can become.
I’ve been admiring this apple tree on my drive to where I park for my morning walks by the Rondout Reservoir. The erratic spring temperatures have wreaked havoc with many of the apple trees this year and their blossoms are sparse. But this tree is bursting with promise – not even last night’s heavy rains or the ongoing early morning drizzle can dampen its magnificent display. I captured this image with my iPhone 4 using the Hipstamatic app and made some additional adjustments in Photoshop.

4.22 - View from a Window in Woodbourne

Creation thrives on inspiration and affirmation rather than direction.
Another busy day that left little time for a walk. Our CAG art group met in the home of one of our members and she was kind enough to allow me to capture this enchanting view from the picture window in her living room. This image was taken with my iPhone 4 using the Hipstamatic app.

4.21 - Grahamsville Reformed Church

Religious shrines throughout the world attest to the fact that when a person experiences extraordinary perceptual change…along with a sudden revelation, he and even his society may consider the place where these things occurred special.
Busy Saturday morning running errands - had to drop my son off at his track meet and take my daughter to the orthodontist - no time for a walk. But I have always admired the sight of this church as you drive up the hill on the way into Grahamsville, so while my husband dropped off my son I hopped out of the car and took a few quick shots with my iPhone using the Hipstamatic app. The overcast sky combined with the app settings creates a wonderfully evocative photo...

4.20 - Forsythia on East Mtn Road

We comfort ourselves by reliving memories of protection.
This morning I visited the road where I grew up. I can remember when these forsythia bushes were planted by our neighbor "Aunt Emma" in anticipation of when she would place a mobile home on the property for her retirement years. She planned to sit on her porch and look out over the yellow flowers to the stream across the street. The mobile home has come and gone - as have the families who lived here, but these lovely forsythia remain.

4.19 - Rondout Hydro-Electric Plant

The same evidence that has been showing us how much of their ordinary environments people respond to is also leading us to the idea that people have within them various brain-body mechanisms that react to different aspects of their surroundings.
Quick walk this morning along my standard route near the Rondout Reservoir - I'm feeling a bit sore from yesterday's rigorous hike through the Lemon Squeeze. While I usually focus on my natural surroundings, the graphic designer in me can't help but admire the contrast in shapes and textures created by the stark lines of this utility fence and the bold outlines of the cement/brick buildings. This image was captured with my iPhone 4 using the Hipstamatic app. Some additional adjustments were made in Photoshop.

4.18 - Sky Top Hiking Trail at Mohonk

4.18.12 Sky Top Trail at Mohonk • 8x8 • limited edition of 30 • © Margaret Helthaler
Deep down, we know our devotion to reality is just a marriage of convenience, and we leave it to the seers, the shamans, the ascetics, the religious teachers, the artists among us to reach a higher state of awareness, from which they transcend our rigorous but routinely analyzing senses and become closer to the raw experience of nature that pours into the unconscious, the world of dreams, the source of myth.
Spent the morning hiking in the Mohonk Preserve and then enjoyed a well deserved pedicure at the Mohonk Mountain House Spa. It was a truly lovely day. I will be sharing more images from this trip on Etsy and CAG in the coming weeks. This image was captured with my iPhone 4 using the Hipstamatic app.

4.17 - Flowering Pear Tree

I understand the spiritual as a way of living the ordinary while sensing the extraordinary.
Beautiful morning with warm sun and a light breeze - we walked along Sundown Road and I was delighted to see this pear tree in bloom - shining in all its glory in the morning light. This tree grows near a bend in the road and I always find its position picturesque against the fields and mountains behind it - especially when its blossoms are at their peak... This image was captured with my iPhone using the Hipstamatic app.

Certainly many Buddhist monks…who spend a lot of time in the mountains believe there’s a big relationship between environment and spirituality. [quoting Hackett]
Beginning of a warm day - I took a solo walk along my familiar route by the Rondout Reservoir. This image was captured with my iPhone 4 using the Hipstamatic app with the John S lens and Pistil film.

4.15 - Big Hollow View

Ultimately a marriage takes place between the visual need and a subject that will answer the need and at the same time satisfy the artist’s other concerns and feelings.
First bike ride of the season and all of my recent hill walking paid off. The bikes enabled us to travel a bit further than our typical walk down Big Hollow. This view is one of my favorites - the play of light and color is always changing depending on the season, weather and time of day... This image was captured with my iPhone 4 using the Hipstamatic app. I made some additional adjustments in Photoshop.

4.14 - Sundown Wild Forest

… always carrying within you the seed crystal for your next destination.
Took a quick walk in the Sundown Wild Forest this morning. The devastation of hurricane Irene remains evident in the sheer quantity of uprooted trees and disturbed river rocks, but amidst the tangled masses of debris are quiet, seemingly untouched pockets like the one shown above. The morning sun was bright and warm - making the emerging leaves sparkle and casting long beautiful shadows... This image was captured with my iPhone 4 using the Hipstamatic app.

4.13 - Visiting Marist College

There is a time for making and time for contemplative looking.
We arrived at the Marist College campus in Poughkeepsie, NY bright and early this morning so my son could participate in an admissions tour. While the campus is beautiful - with sweeping vistas of the Hudson River - I couldn't overlook the pleasing arrangement of these Adirondack chairs in the morning sunlight... 4.12 - Off Road

The idea that “nature is a place where we are not” has ruled for centuries…
Rugged hike this morning - mostly "off the beaten path" with lots of steep hills. This image was captured with my iPhone 4 using the Hipstamatic app.

4.11 - Play of Light

“An artist does not create the way he lives, he lives the way he creates.” (quoting Jean Lescure)
Focusing on interior space today - specifically the play of light on the dining table in our sunroom and the pleasing combination of simple lines, colors and textures presented by this antique bowl against the dark wood grain... This image was captured with my iPhone 4 using the Instagram app.

4.10 - Harbingers of Spring

So much of our life passes in a comfortable blur. Living on the senses requires an easily triggered sense of marvel, a little extra energy, and most people are lazy about life. Life is something that happens to them while they wait for death.
These lovely daffodils are blooming along the edge of our yard. This image was captured with my iPhone 4, using the ShakeIt app.

4.8 - I Lift Up My Eyes To The Hills

I lift up my eyes to the hills. From whence does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.
- Psalms 121: 1-2

This passage has always brought me comfort and seemed an appropriate match for this image of our lovely Catskill Mountains on this glorious Easter Sunday morning... This image was captured with my iPhone 4 using the Hipstamatic app.

4.7 - Big Hollow Barn

Through one system of perception we see ourselves as observers of an environment composted of separated objects, but at the same time, through another system of perception, equally active, we look for ways in which we are connected or are part of our surroundings.
This image was captured with my iPhone 4, using the Hipstamatic app - specifically, the Jimmy lens and Kodot XGrizzled film. This image is available in my Etsy shop.

4.5 - Glade Hill

There are a plethora of symptoms to suggest that we are living in a cultural moment that could be described as split between mind and body.

4.4 - Sundown Church

He comes to realize that the cosmos molds mankind, that it can transform a man of the hills into a man of islands and rivers, and that the house remodels man.

This image was captured with my iPhone 4 using the Hipstamatic app - specifically, the John S lens with Ina's 1969 film. I love the soft blue-green tones this combination provides...

4.3 - Spring Trees by the Rondout

Once beauty employed the language of the traditional arts, but now it doesn’t. It employs, instead, the language of photography. Makeup nowadays enhances not by covering, but by making the original more like it was than it ever was when left alone. Photography, made in an instant, developed in the dark, in a pool of poison, as a simultaneity, is like the beautiful in this property of always being all there at once. Unlike paintings, which are made bit by bit, over time, in the light, but also out of poisonous materials.
The combination of a new Hipstamatic lens package and a telephoto lens attachment on my iPhone 4 produced this impressionistic image of spring trees along the edge of the Rondout Reservoir. The glare of the sun made it difficult to see exactly what I was capturing - as well as focus the lens. But I enjoy the element of chance in photography...

4.2 - Sugar Loaf Road

Few of us seem conscious of how water shapes not only the way we live but the way we see. The oceans and rushing streams and creeks of the East and South, the vast lakes of the northern Midwest, the hide-and-seek rivers of the high Western desert – each defines an ecological psyche.
Our walk along Sugar Loaf road began near this stream. But as the road became steeper, the stream passed through the ravine far below. This image was captured with my iPhone 4 using the Hipstamatic app.
