3.31 - Winter Returns

We are not who we are simply because we think. We are who we are because we can remember what we have thought about.

I never tire of the beautiful shape, colors and textures this old barn presents on the side of Big Hollow Road. This image was captured with my iPhone 4 using the Hipstamatic app. This image is available in my Etsy shop.

3.30 - Ackerley Road

…the maps we make in our minds embody experience exactly as paper maps do, accumulated as we have made our way through the world in the activity of our living.
It was a chilly 31 degrees this morning and we were buffeted by a strong wind as we pushed our way up this steep winding route. But the sun warmed our backs and the views were spectacular.

3.29 - Top of Sunrise Drive

Space defines landscape, where space combined with memory defines place.

3.28 - Peace Lily in Sunroom Window

The space we love is unwilling to remain permanently enclosed. It deploys and appears to move elsewhere without difficulty; into other times, and on different planes of dream and memory.
I wasn't able to get out for a walk this morning because I'm waiting for a service person to arrive to upgrade our Internet/cable service. The weather has also become questionable, with some rolling thunder and light rain. So instead of sweeping vistas, I decided to focus on interior space today. Here is a shot of the Peace Lily that inhabits the corner of our sun room. Interestingly enough, these plants are known for improving indoor air quality so they truly are a breath of fresh air...

3.27 - Boat on Lake Paradise

When we immerse our weary brains in soothing patterns of natural input, such as rippling water, sighing branches, or drifting clouds, fewer things compete for our attention and drain our energy, and we start to feel refreshed.

3.26 - Pussy Willow in the Morning Light

You were made and set here to give voice to this, your own astonishment.
It is a cool, blustery spring morning in the Catskills. Clouds scuttle across the sky bringing misty showers of light rain and turning sunrays into unpredictable spotlights amongst the rolling hills. This pussy willow tree shimmered in the light ahead as my friend and I walked on Sundown Road.

3.25 - Big Hollow Barn

Our senses connect us intimately to the past, connect us in ways that most of our cherished ideas never could.

3.24 - Top of Skyline Drive

Space has a spiritual equivalent and can heal what is divided and burdensome in us. My grandchildren will probably use space shuttles for a honeymoon trip or to recover from heart attacks, but closer to home we might also learn how to carry space inside ourselves in the effortless way we carry our skins. Space represents sanity, not a life purified, dull, or “spaced out” but one that might accommodate intelligently any idea or situation.

My husband and I ventured on a different path this morning. We walked up a dead-end road we seldom travel. After making our way up the steep winding incline we were greeted with this view and a sense of place that felt far removed from our nearby home below. 3.23 - Edge of the Rondout

I always find this stand of dead trees beautiful in the morning light. Their bleached trunks offer a stark contrast against the lush evergreens behind them... This image was captured with my iPhone, using digital zoom and the HDR setting.
