9.13 - Receiving Vault at Grahamsville Rural Cemetery

9.13.12 Receiving Vault at Grahamsville Rural Cemetery • © Margaret Helthaler
We decided to take a walk through the cemetery this morning. I paid my respects to my grandmother and great-grandparents and enjoyed the serene beauty and sense of history that pervades the quiet back section of the grounds.

  1. I thought it might be helpful to share some additional information about this image. It is my understanding that this temporary receiving vault was used to store the deceased in the winter. Graves would be dug when the ground was no longer frozen. I was attracted to the evocative textures and colors - the contrast between the stonework and rusted metal door - as well as the historical significance of the structure.
